Magic is a performance art in which audiences are amused by effects, tricks, or illusions of seemingly impossible feats performed using natural methods. It includes the subgenres of illusion, stage magic, and close-up magic, among others. It should not be confused with paranormal magic, which is said to produce effects through supernatural means. One of the world's oldest performing arts is it.

According to etymology, the word magic comes from the Greek word mageia. The Persian priests, known as magosh in Persian, became known as magoi in Greek due to the centuries-long conflict between the Greeks and the Persians in antiquity. The term magika gradually evolved to refer to any foreign, unconventional, or illicit ritual practise. Mageia and magika were the terms used to describe the ceremonial actions of Persian priests. Successful illusions could be seen by the general people as resembling a magic trick that the ancient magoi were rumoured to have been able to execute. It has been customary to speak to magic, and more specifically, magic tricks, as the practise of illusionary tricks or magical illusions, as well as the apparent workings and consequences of such acts.
