An extreme kind of physical flexibility is displayed by artists known as contortionists during contortion (also known as contortionism). Acrobatics, circus performances, street performers, and other forms of live performance art sometimes include contortion acts.

Most often, live audiences are present when contortion acts are done. An act will feature one or more artists performing a choreographed series of positions or moves that call for exceptional flexibility, frequently to music. Such actions need a level of physical flexibility that is well above what is typical of the average population. The stunning displays of seemingly superhuman flexibility are what hold people's attention.

A contortionist may perform alone, with one or two assistants, or as part of a troupe of up to four other contortionists.

Contortionists used to be almost exclusively linked with circuses and fairs, but more lately, they have also found work as entertainers in nightclubs, theme parks, magazine commercials, trade exhibits, television variety shows, music videos, and warm-up or background acts at concerts.
