Nikkhil Advani's 2019 action-thriller movie Batla House is in the Hindi language. The movie, which stars John Abraham as the eponymous lead, is based on the Batla House encounter case, which occurred on September 19, 2008. It is based on the life of Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, a policeman who was crucial in the encounter that claimed the life of Mohan Chand Sharma, one of his colleagues. The film depicts the encounter and Sanjeev's subsequent battle to apprehend the fugitives and establish the veracity of the encounter while coping with widespread animosity and post-traumatic stress disorder.
5 college students who may have been engaged in the Delhi bombings of September 13, 2008, for which the terrorist group "Indian Mujahideen" claimed credit have been cornered by ACP Sanjay Kumar's squad at L-18, Batla House. Sanjay urges his men not to fight until he gets there, but inspector Kishan Kumar Verma, well known by his pseudonym K. K., moves forward with a few of his men. When Sanjay arrives, he decides to get involved after hearing the gunshots. K. K. is discovered shot to death after the building has been cleaned. Adil Ameen and Sadiq Khan are killed as a consequence of more shootings after Sanjay enters the room, while Tufail Khan is captured alive.
Sanjay is now being criticised by the media and politicians who are painting the meeting as a hoax. Everyone starts calling for justice for the youths who were allegedly executed for the bombings, and the entire nation joins them in denouncing the Delhi Police. However, news presenter Nandita Kumar, Sanjay's wife, is unable to accept this and chooses to remain with him. Sanjay develops post-traumatic stress disorder and frequently has hallucinations of being shot by terrorists. When he starts to consider suicide, Nandita somehow intervenes.
One of the Dilshad and Jawed who managed to flee the encounter is discovered by Sanjay to be hidden in Nizampur, Uttar Pradesh. The police commissioner informs him that he will be rewarded for the incident and that he needs to celebrate. When he realises he hasn't been informed where to celebrate, he goes to Nizampur and locates one of the fugitives, Dilshad. Everybody there attempts to block Sanjay, who chases, assaults, and nearly apprehends Dilshad before being caught by the crowd and politicians who allow him to flee without Dilshad.
Following his attainment of the President Medal, Sanjay resumes his search and this time, with the help of Dilshad's girlfriend Huma, who deceives him into travelling to Nepal. As part of his plan, he reunites with his colleagues and dispatches a van to take up Dilshad. The latter, though, dispatches a different individual to look for anything unusual. When Sanjay realises Dilshad isn't in the van, he rushes to stop his cops from engaging and lets the van escape. After learning there is nothing odd, Dilshad tells the driver he will leave the following day. However, when he lands in Nepal, Sanjay and his squad stop him, beat him up, and then take him into custody.
Beginning with a parallel story of fictitious encounters, the opposing attorney, Shailesh Arya, raises objections to Sanjay's truth and claims that K. K. and his men tortured the students in L-18 and then decided to kill them despite being told not to, leading to K. K. being gunned down by one of his chiefs. However, Sanjay reveals the truth, revealing that in reality, his men had been diligently observing the students and had discovered they were from the IM.
The actual shootout then takes place, showing K. K. and his squad interacting as the students opened fire, and the fact that K. K. died while giving Sanjay's claim that no officer has ever died in a phoney encounter considerable credence. The two terrorists receive life sentences as a result of his arguments, and the third terrorist manages to flee the country.
A video that emerged in 2016 showcased a testimony from the terrorist Jawed who had fled the execution and later joined ISIS, further affirming the legitimacy of the encounter. Despite this, some media outlets continue to oppose the decision and hold the police responsible.
Batla House received critical and commercial acclaim, earning close to INR 110 crores at the box office. It was praised for staying true to the source material and for instilling a sense of nationalism in the viewers. Many critics also praised John Abraham for his performance, calling it the best of his career. The movie also stars Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Sonam Arora and Alok Pandey, among others, in important roles.
