Ravi Chopra's drama film Baghban was released in 2003. Raj and Pooja, an old couple who've been together for forty years, are the subjects of the story. They gather with their four sons Ajay, Sanjay, Rohit, and Karan after Raj retires to talk about who would provide for them. Raj and Pooja split up because none of the sons wanted to care for both of their parents. Each spends the ensuing six months living with one of the guys. They believe their parents will decline the offer and continue to live in their house. Raj and Pooja accept the proposition despite their reluctance.
They put up with mistreatment and separation by their kids. Pooja stays with Ajay first, then with Karan; Raj stays first with Sanjay, then with Rohit. Raj's grandson Rahul is the only one who shows Raj love when he is residing with Sanjay. Raj writes about how he fulfilled his children's goals and their treatment in return after becoming heartbroken by the manner he has been neglected by them. He also discusses his love for his wife and the suffering their separation has brought about. Raj finally publishes a novel using his work. Ajay, her daughter-in-law Kiran, and her grandchild Payal mistreat Pooja. But after Pooja prevents Payal from being sexually assaulted by her partner and shows her love, Payal decides to change her ways.
Pooja and Raj finally get to spend time together in Vijaynagar after six months. When they run into Alok, he welcomes them inside his house and takes care of them. Raj discovers that his poems have been released under the pen name Baghban, which honours Hemant, a café owner whom he got to know while staying with Sanjay. Raj has the money he needs to maintain himself and Pooja thanks to the novel's success. While taking part in a book ceremony with their wives, their sons beg their parents' forgiveness. However, Raj and Pooja disown their four sons for the suffering they have brought about and refuse to provide them forgiveness.
The movie received mixed response from the audience, who praised the acting performance of Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini but criticised the lack of chemistry between the story and the actors. It did great business at the box office, earning close to INR 42 crores and was the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year 2003. Amitabh Bachchan also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his role as Raj. Along with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, it also stars Salman Khan, Rimi Sen, Mahima Chaudhry, Rimi Sen, Aman Verma and Nasirr Khan in important roles.
