S. S. Rajamouli co-wrote and directed the 2015 Indian epic action film Baahubali: The Beginning, which was also co-produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under the banner of Arka Media Works. The movie was simultaneously shot in Tamil and Telugu and was produced at Tollywood, the hub of Telugu cinema in India. Along with Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishna, Sathyaraj, and Nassar, the movie stars Prabhas in a quadruple role as grandfather, father, and son, as well as two leads and one photographic appearance. In the first of two films, Sivudu, a daring young man, aids his love Avantika in freeing Devasena, the former queen of Mahishmati who is now imprisoned under the cruel tyranny of king Bhallaladeva.

Sivagami, a hurt woman bearing a child, emerges from a cave beneath a mountain waterfall near the ancient Indian kingdom of Mahishmati. After taking out two soldiers who were after her, she tried to cross a rushing river but slipped and got swept away in the flow. Before drowning, she lifts the child in prayer to Lord Siva while expressing her disinterest in her own life and her desire for Mahendra Baahubali to survive. The indigenous Amburi tribe, who live close to the river and revere Lord Siva, saves the infant. Sanga's wife, the tribe's chieftain, agrees to adopt the child and gives him the name Sivudu.

Sivudu develops into an ambitious, cheeky child who is fixated on climbing the mountain. He repeatedly tries to mount the cliffs despite Sanga's pleading, but he always fails. When he is young, he exhibits superhuman power by lifting a Lingam of Lord Siva and setting it down at the base of the mountain. Then, a mask tumbles from the rocks. Sivudu finally succeeds in climbing the mountain to locate the woman who the mask belongs to after realising it has feminine traits. When he reaches the top, he observes Avantika, a stunning woman, battling Mahishmati warriors. He learns that she is a part of a rebel movement that aims to depose Lord Bhallaladeva, the oppressive ruler of Mahishmati, and free the princess held captive by the monarchy.

Sivudu falls in love with Avantika right away and begins to stalk her covertly. He even manages to tattoo her while she sleeps. She assaults Sivudu when she learns who he is, but he outwits her and gives her back her disguise. She acknowledges his feelings for her after realising he climbed the entire mountain to locate her.

When other troops attack the two, Sivudu promises to save Devasena himself and leaves for Mahishmati after fighting them. On Bhallaladeva's birthday, he sneaks into the city and helps build a massive statue of the monarch.

He is then identified by a worker, who goes on to lead the other workers in chanting "Baahubali," much to Sivudu and Bhallaladeva's astonishment. Later, Sivudu sneaks inside the royal palace dressed as a soldier to confuse Bhallaladeva and his guards so that he can free Devasena. The royal family's devoted slave Kattappa and Bhallaladeva's son Bhadra are sent to retrieve Devasena. Sivudu beheads Bhadra in the subsequent combat as the Amburi tribe and rebel fighters approach. Kattappa makes a lunging attack on Sivudu but holds back when he sees his face. He submits to Sivudu, claiming him to be "Baahubali," and falls at his feet.

The following morning, Kattappa tells Sivudu that he is truly Mahendra Baahubali, the well-known Mahishmati warrior prince Amarendra Baahubali's son. King Vikramadeva's death and the death of his mother during childbirth left Amarendra Baahubali an orphan at birth. Due to his cunning nature, Lord Bijjaladeva, Vikramadeva's brother and the next in line for the throne, is disqualified from holding the position. As a result, Lady Sivagami, Bijjaladeva's wife, takes over with the aim of raising both her son Bhallaladeva and the orphaned Baahubali equally in order to choose the next heir to the throne.

Despite being brought up as brothers and receiving rigorous training in many areas, Bhallaladeva retains his father's desire for power, while Baahubali's charming personality wins the kingdom over.

Saketudu, a traitor, turns out to be a spy for the vicious Kaalakeya tribe, also known as the kingdom-destroying tribe. After their leader Inkoshi declares war on Mahishmati, Sivagami decrees that the winner will be whoever kills Inkoshi. Even though Bijjaladeva covertly gives Bhallaladeva more men and weaponry, Baahubali still manages to thwart more raiders than Bhallaladeva thanks to his creative strategies and ability to motivate his troops.

Baahubali's bravery and concern for the subjects of his realm persuade Sivagami to name Baahubali heir apparent as Bhallaaladeva kills Inkoshi.

After hearing Kattappa's tale, Sivudu's adoptive parents now want to meet Baahubali. When Sivudu questions a dejected Kattappa about Amarendra Baahubali's death, he admits that the traitor who killed Baahubali was none other than him, paving the way for a sequel. It is revealed that Kattapa is Mahendra's father's sidekick.
