Kiran, a resident of Delhi, marries Vivek, but he quickly leaves her and moves to America, never again to come back, leaving her to raise Raj by herself. She later learns that Vivek had never been in love with her but was compelled to wed her in order to inherit anything from his late father. She kept his father a secret from Raj because she didn't want him to grow up despising him.

Years later, Raj is an adult, a student at Dominic Savio College, and a basketball player.
