Qualifying Procedures

There are three ways to secure a spot in the 2023 World Athletics Championships;

The first and simplest way is to achieve the qualifying standards for the World Athletics Championships during any authorized World Athletics event within the designated qualification time frame. The 2023 global athletics championships are accessible to athletes directly, thanks to this.

Athletes can also qualify based on where they are ranked worldwide after the qualification season. The number of qualified athletes directly determines the seats available through rankings.

Finishing positions in specific athletic competitions are the third option to qualify. For instance, most individual events' reigning Area or continental champions are eligible to compete.

To obtain a direct entrance, athletes must break the qualifying mark in an event held within that time range.

The qualifying period for the marathon and 35 km race walk began on December 1, 2021, and will end on May 30, 2023. The 10,000m, 20km race walk and combined events window is from January 31, 2022, to July 30, 2023. The qualification period for all other events is from July 31, 2022, to July 30, 2023.

History

The World Athletics (previously known as World Championships in Athletics) determined that the Olympic Games would serve as the World Athletics Championships in 1913. It lasted 50 years, but by the late 1960s, several World Athletics members wanted their own World Championships. An Athletics World Championships separate from the Olympic Games was agreed upon at the World Athletics Council Meeting in Puerto Rico in 1976.

Considering applications from both Stuttgart, West Germany, and Helsinki, Finland, the IAAF Council awarded the debut tournament to Helsinki to be contested in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in 1983. In 1983, 1,333 athletes from 153 different countries competed. The size of the competition has expanded over time. It had grown to 1,679 athletes from 198 countries by the 2003 competition in Paris, with broadcast reaching 179 countries.

World Records

At the tournament, 35 world records were set or matched: 18 by men, 15 by women, and 2 in the mixed relay. In 1983, Jarmila Kratochvlová of Czechoslovakia set the first world record at the World Championships by winning the women's 400 m final in 47.99 seconds. The 1993 World Championships saw a high of five world records. 

The latest world record was set in the Men's Pole vault in 2022 by Armand Duplantis of Sweden, who cleared 6.21 meters. With fourteen world records, American athletes have been the most successful, followed by Jamaica and the United Kingdom, each with four. Usain Bolt of Jamaica has broken the most world records in the competition, with four.
