The All England Croquet Club was renamed The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in the spring of 1877, and it marked the occasion by holding the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The Marylebone Cricket Club's code of laws was replaced by a new set of rules created for the occasion. With a few exceptions, like the height of the net and posts and the separation of the service line from the net, the rules were essentially the same as they are today.

Gore received a silver cup from the sports journal The Field and the first-place reward of 12 guineas. He was considered one of the sport's pioneers, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in tennis circles. Born on the 10th of March 1850, Spencer Gore played his first first-class cricket match for Surrey versus Middlesex in 1874, scoring 17 runs off the first four balls he played. He is regarded as the inventor of the volley style because he was the first player to employ the tactic.

William Renshaw

William Renshaw, born on the 3rd of January 1861, was a British tennis player who dominated the sport in the late 1800s. He collected twelve Wimbledon victories and was known for his powerful serve and volleying skills. He won the tournament six times in a row from 1881 to 1886. William Renshaw was also a successful doubles player, winning five Wimbledon titles with his brother Ernest. He remains one of the most successful players in Wimbledon's history.

Bjorn Borg

Bjorn Borg is a legendary Swedish tennis player who dominated the sport in the 1970s and 1980s. He won 11 Grand Slam titles, including five consecutive Wimbledon titles and five French Open titles.
