Introduction

Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2022 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Thor. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017). It depicts the story of Gorr, an ordinary person who becomes an evil god and vows to kill all the gods, and how Thor stops Gorr. Along with the main story is also the romantic angle of Thor and Dr. Jane Foster, which is told along with the main story in a very interesting fashion.

Details

Story

Thor: Love and Thunder is yet another spectacle from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story traces the journey of Gorr and his daughter. The movie begins as a beautiful portrayal of a father’s love for his daughter, but things go South when Gorr’s daughter dies, and he decides to avenge her death by killing all the gods. Thor, along with  Valkyrie and Korg, fights Gorr.

Foster is battling cancer at Asgard, and her Thor form prevents her from fighting the disease naturally. After a huge battle of weapons and emotions, Gorr’s daughter is blessed with eternal life. Valkyrie and Korg return to Asgard to train the children in warfare while a memorial is being built for Foster, who succumbs to cancer. During the end credits, Foster reaches the Valhalla gates and is welcomed by Heimdall. 

Release

Thor: Love and Thunder had its theatrical release on July 8, 2022, in the USA and other countries. It opened to positive reviews and collected more than $300 million at the box office on the opening weekend. It had a huge release all over the world, but it faced a few roadblocks in certain countries due to LGBT elements.

Thor: Love and Thunder is a Marvel Studios movie that was released in 2022. Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie is the sequel to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson. The movie will see Thor reunite with some of his fellow Avengers as they attempt to stop an ancient evil. Thor will have to use his newfound powers to battle against the forces of evil and protect his homeworld.

Additionally, he will be joined by some new allies who will help him on his quest. The film promises an exciting and action-packed story that will no doubt thrill fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With a talented cast, spectacular special effects, and the return of some fan-favourite characters, love and thunder was one of the most awaited Marvel films of recent times.

Character Analysis

Thor

Thor is a powerful god of Norse mythology, associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing, and fertility. He is the son of Odin and the elder brother of Loki. He is often depicted as being a large and powerful figure with a red beard and a hammer called Mjölnir. He is a protector of Asgard, the realm of the gods, and is associated with the protection of mankind and Midgard, the realm of mortals. He is known for his strength, bravery, and courage in battle. 

Gorr

Gorr, the God Butcher, is a powerful Marvel Comics anti-hero who has appeared in the Thor franchise, The Mighty Thor comics, and other comics and media. He is a powerful and ruthless figure who has sought to eradicate every god in existence. He is incredibly powerful and violent and is said to be capable of killing gods with just a touch. He is incredibly strong, fast, and durable and is able to survive in any environment.

Gorr is also extremely intelligent, able to use his god-like powers and knowledge to outmanoeuvre and outsmart his opponents. He is determined and relentless in the pursuit of his goals and will stop at nothing to achieve them. He is also a master strategist, able to come up with plans that are beyond the capabilities of mortal characters. He is also capable of manipulating individuals and manipulating situations to his advantage.

Valkyrie

A Valkyrie is a strong female figure in Norse mythology, typically seen as being of divine origin and possessing magical powers. She is known for being beautiful and powerful, with strong moral codes, often coming to the aid of heroes in battle. 

A Valkyrie is often understood to be the protector of warriors and is said to carry the souls of the fallen to Valhalla, the hall of the Gods. They are often seen as a symbol of female empowerment. 

Sif

Sif is a fierce and powerful Asgardian warrior goddess from the Thor franchise. She is beautiful, brave, and cunning. Her loyalty to Thor is unmatched, and she always has his back in any fight. She is skilled in combat and can take on even the toughest of foes. She is an eternal optimist, and despite her daunting appearance, she is compassionate and kind. She has a strong sense of justice and stands up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Sif is a master strategist and has an affinity for technology, making her a valuable asset in any battle.

Behind the Scenes

Being one of the biggest marvel films, Thor: Love and Thunder had a lot of interesting behind-the-scenes facts.

• The shadow monsters that we see in the film. These creatures were designed by kids’ of the cast and crew.

• One of the movie's most famous scenes, the scene where Gorr meets eternity, was shot in the Best Buy parking lot.

• Thor’s body had many tattoos, some of which the director drew.

• When Russell Crowe appears as Zeus, minimal to no makeup was required as he had grown his hair and beard for another project.

Controversy 

Marvel films usually steer clear of controversy as they always aspire to have a worldwide opening simultaneously. Citing the reason as the presence of themes such as LGBT. The film was not allowed to be released in certain countries like the middle east, Malaysia, etc.

Box Office Collection

This movie was made on a budget of $250 Million and ended up with a box office collection of almost $761 Million. It made the largest debut for a Thor Franchise, the third-largest in 2022, and the 12th largest for a film that is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Interesting Facts

Inspiration: The director Taika Waititi took inspiration for this movie from comic books and a scrapped TV show. 

Greek Accent for Zeus:  Russell Crowe wanted to improvise and had to convince the director that the Greek God Zeus may speak English in a Greek accent. However, the director was not fully convinced and asked Russell to shoot the dialogues in British and Greek accents. Russell Crowe turned out to be right, and his Greek accent featured in the final cut.  

Look Change: Director Taika Waititi wanted to change the look of Gorr as he felt his character looked a lot like Voldemort (Antagonist Character in the Harry Potter series). After various look tests, they arrived at the final look, and Gorr really did look like a God killer.  

Ideas Shared: As there are a few scenes with the Guardians of the Galaxy cast in Thor: Love and Thunder, both the directors sat together and exchanged ideas on how to weave the characters into the current film without changing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as it was set to be released after Thor: Love and Thunder.  

Thor will return: Both Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth were equally surprised when they saw the preview as a slide saying “Thor will Return” was added. It was added without their knowledge. Although Waititi is open to another Thor movie, he said that he would do it only if Hemsworth accepted to play the role of Thor. 

Conclusion

Thor: Love and Thunder might not be the best of marvel movies, but it does add its own charm and playfulness to the otherwise template-driven Marvel films. Taika Waititi does his best to keep the mood lightened in the non-Gorr portions of the movie, and that has worked big time. There are other rumours floating around saying there just might be only one more thor film where Chris Hemsworth plays the titular role, after which the superhero may get a reboot. All said and done, Thor: Love and Thunder do have its moments but only a handful.
