Rani Rampal’s Struggle

I wanted to go away from my life from the insects buzzing in my ears while I slept to the energy shortages from barely having two square meals to watching our house flood during heavy rain. Despite their best efforts my parents were only able to do so much because Maa worked as a cleaner and Papa as a cart puller.

I would spend hours watching hockey players train because there was an academy nearby. I wanted to play. Papa's daily income of Rs. 80 prevented him from purchasing a stick for me. Since I didn't have any practice gear I started practicing with a broken hockey stick I discovered on the field while wearing a salwar kameez.

But I was adamant about proving my worth. I begged the coach to give me a chance and eventually Maine bahut mushkil se persuade Kiya unko! My family on the other hand said Ladkiya Ghar ka kaam hi karti hai and Hum tumhe skirt pehen Kar khelne Nahi denge when I told them what had happened.

I would beg them Please mujhe jaane do (please let me go). I'll comply with your wishes if I fail. My family gave in grudgingly. Early in the morning the training would begin. Mom would stay up and watch the sky to see if it was time to get me up because we didn't even have a clock.

Through thick and thin my coach was there for me buying me hockey equipment and sneakers. He even let me stay with his family and provided for my food requirements. I would practice every day and put forth a lot of effort. I recall getting my first salary; I got Rs. 500 after winning a tournament and delivering the money to Papa. Never before has she held so much money in his palms. I promised my family that we would have our own home one day and I did everything in my ability to make that promise come true.

I finally received a national call-up at the age of 15 after playing for my state and participating in multiple competitions! Still my relatives would only inquire about my impending nuptials. Papa though instructed me to play to my heart's content. I worked hard to represent India to the best of my ability with the help of my family and eventually I was named captain of the Indian hockey team.

A friend of papa's that he used to work with soon paid us a visit when I was at home. His granddaughter whom dad brought along told me she was impressed by me and wanted to play hockey. I just started crying because I was so pleased.

Together we sobbed and hugged one another. And I'm not through yet; this year I'm resolved to give them and Coach what they've always wanted—a gold medal from Tokyo—as payment.
