David Willey is an English cricketer who plays for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Willey is a left-handed fast-medium bowler who can also bat. Peter Willey his father is a former English cricketer and an international umpire.

Willey who can swing the new ball and bat well got his first taste of county cricket when Northamptonshire signed him in 2009. He made his debut against Leicestershire scoring 60 runs.

David's true abilities shone through in T20 cricket. In the 2009 T20 competition he had a bowling average of 11.30. He helped his team win the 2012 Friends Life T20 Championship with some crucial contributions with the bat and 43 wickets with the ball. Willey joined Yorkshire on a three-year deal beginning with the 2016 season.

Carolynne met David at a cricket match while watching her friend Jonny Bairstow play at Old Trafford. To be honest I wanted to support my friend but I didn't want to watch cricket she said. I went to say goodbye to Jonny after the game knowing David would be there as well but I was too shy and embarrassed to go back to the car.

Carolynne recalls David getting down on one knee and proposing to her with a sparkling white diamond pear drop-style ring. David revealed the proposal's details saying I said 'These are some of the memories we've made over the past year and I want to make memories with you for the rest of my life.' Then I started crying so much and thought 'Oh God if he sees my face he'll change his mind.' Carolynne joked. Carolynne reached The X Factor's Judges' Houses stage in 2011 and the live shows with Gary Barlow as her mentor in 2012 when she performed as Carolynne Poole.

David was in front of me and it was like 'Oh he's suddenly here.' I'd been single for a long time and had reached the point where I'd rather spend time with my family and close friends than go on a stupid date. We were both nervous David added. We spent the entire day chatting in a pub beer garden and the majority of the time we were laughing which was a good sign. 

I knew I wanted to see her again as soon as she left. Carolynne joked about their age difference saying Look at his face. We always say that it should be the other way around mentally. He has an ancient soul. In November 2016 David Willey married singer-songwriter Carolynne Willey.

David Willey’s Domestic Career

Northamptonshire

Willey began his career in the County Championship Division II for his home county Northamptonshire. After rising through the ranks at Northampton's O.N. and Northants Academy he was given his chance in the 2009 season at 19 after a strong pre-season. His debut came against Leicestershire in the season opener against one of his father's old clubs. 

He scored 60 on debut after a good partnership with Andrew Hall but did not sustain this in his first one-day game against Essex getting out for a duck with a poor shot. His first first-class wicket came against Kent in his second first-class match when he had Phil Edwards out LBW.

After a strong start to the season he was rewarded with a two-year professional contract on May 8. He excelled in Twenty20 cricket this time with his bowling taking 3/9 in his first spell against Worcestershire and finishing the 2009 competition with an average of 11.30. In 2010 he appeared on Cricket AM's Brain vs. Brawn alongside Northants teammate Jack Brooks.

Willey helped Northamptonshire to a 102-run victory over Surrey in a rain-shortened Friends Life Twenty20 Final in 2013. He batted for 60 runs then had figures of 4/9 including a match-ending hat-trick to clean up the tail.

Yorkshire

Willey signed a three-year contract with Yorkshire at the start of the 2016 season which was announced on August 19 2015. On May 1 2016 he made his Yorkshire debut against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Perth Scorchers

Willey was signed by the Perth Scorchers for the 2015-16 BBL season. After a successful first season he was re-signed for the 2016-17 season. He took two wickets in the first match against the Adelaide Strikers but only scored two runs off five balls with the bat.

In the Scorchers' second match against the Sydney Sixers he scored one run and did not take a wicket in a crushing defeat. In the third match against Melbourne he bowled well taking two wickets with the ball before Ashton Agar scored a six to win the match in the final over. He was retained by the Scorchers for the 2017-18 season as the club's only overseas player.

Indian Premier League

Willey was signed by Chennai Super Kings for the 2018 IPL season to replace Kedar Jadhav who was injured in the tournament's first match and he was also considered a replacement for injured New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner. David Willey was playing county cricket for Yorkshire at the time of his late IPL call-up before agreeing to play for CSK. 

He was also the 12th English player to be called up for the 2018 IPL season. During the 2018 IPL he was one of three England cricketers to receive late IPL call-ups alongside Liam Plunkett (for DD) and Alex Hales (for SRH).

David Willey has been retained by the Chennai Super Kings for the 2019 IPL season. The Chennai Super Kings released him ahead of the 2020 IPL auction. In the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League he was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore in February 2022.

David Willey's International Career

Ireland

Willey was named to England's U19 cricket squad for the Test series against Bangladesh. Despite not playing in the first Test he scored 65 runs in the first two innings of the second. On May 8 2015 he made his One Day International debut for England against Ireland taking his first wicket in a rain-affected match.

Willey took 2-32 in England's lone T20 against Australia which England won by five runs. He played in the final two One-Day Internationals against Australia taking 3-51 in the fourth ODI as England won by three wickets. Willey was out for a duck in the final ODI but took 1-13 as England lost the match and series 3-2.

Willey was retained in the team for the ODI series against Pakistan. He didn't take a wicket in the first game but came back with 3-25 in the second to help England win by 95 runs. In the third game he took 1-45 before taking 2-34 in the final game of the series to help England defeat Pakistan by 84 runs.

South Africa

Willey appeared in the first three matches against South Africa taking 1-30 in the first which England won by 39 runs on the DL method. He did not take a wicket in the second and third games and did not play in the final two. 

England ultimately lost the series 3-2. Willey took 0-15 and scored an unbeaten seven with the bat in England's first T20I against South Africa but England lost by three wickets.

T20 World Cup

Willey appeared in every game of England's World T20 campaign in 2016. He had a 1-33 record against the West Indies and a 1-40 record against South Africa. He was instrumental in England's victory over Afghanistan scoring an unbeaten 20 to help England reach 141 before taking 2-23 with the ball. In that same match he set the record for the highest 8th wicket partnership in T20 World Cup history 57 runs with Moeen Ali. Willey continued to shine against Sri Lanka finishing with figures of 2-26. 

Willey was found guilty and fined 15% of his match fee after the match for using obscene language and pointing toward the pavilion to send Sri Lankan batsman Milinda Siriwardana off. He scored 1-17 against New Zealand in the semi-finals to help England reach the final. While Willey bowled well finishing with figures of 3-20 England fell just short and finished as runners-up. The ICC named him to the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka Pakistan And Bangladesh

David Willey took 2-56 in the first One-Day International against Sri Lanka which ended in a tie. He took 1-65 in the second ODI which England won by ten wickets and another wicket in the third ODI which was called off due to rain. In the fourth match of the series he took 2-58 to help restrict Sri Lanka to 305 and England went on to win by six wickets. He took 4-34 in the final match of the series to help England win by 122 runs and the series 3-0.

Willey played in the fourth ODI against Pakistan but he did not take a wicket and finished with figures of 0-40 despite England winning the match. Willey did not take a wicket in England's final match of the series. England won the series 4-1. Willey batted 12 times and took 0-16 in England's lone T20 match.

Willey did not take a wicket in England's 21-run victory over Bangladesh in the first ODI. In the second match England lost by 34 runs and he finished with figures of 0-36. He did not play in the series finale which England won.

India West Indies

Willey scored an unbeaten ten runs in the first ODI before taking 2-47 as England lost by three wickets. In the second ODI he took 0-32 as India won by 15 runs. He took 1-8 in the final ODI but was injured allowing England to win by five runs.

Willey started the first ODI series against the West Indies in September taking a figure of 1-39 as England won by seven wickets. He was chosen for the next match but he was unable to participate because the game was called off due to rain after only two balls were played. 

Willey scored 1-34 as England defeated the West Indies for the third time. He did not play in the series' final two games but England won both of them and the series 4-0.

Tri Series Australia

Willey scored only three runs in the second Twenty20 match of the tri-series but he took a figure of 3-28 which was insufficient for England which lost to Australia. Willey scored ten runs and took 1-30 as England was defeated by Australia in the third game. In the next match England lost to New Zealand for the third time in the series and he scored 21 runs but took no wickets. He scored ten runs and did not take a wicket but England defeated New Zealand this time in the series finale.

David Willey took a 1-41 and scored an unbeaten 35 runs as England defeated Australia in the first ODI of the series. In the next match England defeated Australia again and he scored eleven runs while taking no wickets. Willey took 2-56 as England won the third match against Australia with a record-breaking 481 for 6 which is also the highest score in the history of ODI cricket and the most crushing defeat in terms of runs ever inflicted on Australia.

Willey took four wickets and allowed 43 runs as his team defeated Australia in the fourth match. He did not play in the final match of the series even though England won the match and the series 5-0. Willey took 1-31 as England defeated Australia in the only T20.

Cricket World Cup

David Willey was named to England's provisional squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. Willey was not named in England's final fifteen-man World Cup squad which was announced on May 21 2019. Willey was named to a 55-man training squad on May 29 2020 ahead of the start of international matches in England following the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Willey was named to England's 24-man squad on July 9 2020 to begin training behind closed doors for the ODI series against Ireland. Willey was named to England's One-Day International squad on July 27 2020. Willey took his first five-wicket haul in an ODI on July 30 2020 against Ireland with figures of 5/30 from 8.4 overs.

Willey made his 50th ODI appearance on June 29 2021 in the opening match against Sri Lanka. Willey was named to England's squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in September 2021.
