With just two sewing machines and a loan from my father I launched my business in 1995. In a small 300-square-foot space my sister and I would create western clothing for women which she reveals exclusively to SMBStory.

But fashion retailers and retail businesses turned down her creations and mall owners wouldn't let her open a shop there. But this didn't stop the obstinate child. I was so enraged she claims that I chose to launch my own company and handle everything on my own. This marked the start of the Mumbai-based AND Designs which changed its name to the House of Anita Dongre in 2015. With brands like AND Global Desi Anita Dongre Bridal Couture Anita Dongre Grassroot and Anita Dongre Pink City the venture now has a multifaceted portfolio.

Anita's idea has become a successful fashion house after years of struggle and hardship employing over 2 700 people directly and thousands more indirectly including artisans in rural Indian villages. According to her it had retail revenue of Rs 800 crore in 2019–20.

Anita Dongre's Career

Anita Dongre Pink City a jewellery line that also falls under the House of Anita Dongre umbrella was established by Dongre. AND Designs India Limited changed its name to House of Anita Dongre in 2015.

The current tenants of House of Anita Dongre are AND (western wear) Global Desi (a boho-chic line influenced by Indian folklore) and her own label ANITA DONGRE. Anita Dongre Grassroot was recently welcomed into her fashion house by the woman. She also started the jadau fine jewellery company Pink City.

Dongre concentrates on the design side of the business while her brother and sister run the day-to-day operations. She serves as the company's Chief Creative Officer.
