Laxmi Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Laxmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and happiness. Kojagiri Purnima, or Bengal Laxmi Puja, is another name for this day of Laxmi Puja. As the Goddess of Prosperity, Laxmi is thought to descend on Earth on the day of “Ashwin Purnima” to lavishly shower everyone with prosperity and good health. In some regions of the nation, Kojagiri Purnima is also known as Sharad Purnima. It is a major celebration in Central India, especially in the regions of Bundelkhand and a few areas of Bihar.
Laxmi Puja holds immense significance as it marks the beginning of the new year according to the Hindu calendar. The rituals associated with the puja include keeping the main door open to invite the goddess into the home, decorating the house with rangoli (colored patterns), flowers, and lights, wearing new clothes, and observing fasting. Laxmi Puja is also considered an auspicious time for initiating new ventures and accounting years in businesses.
The purpose of Kojagara Puja is to appease Goddess Laxmi. Hindus consider the Purnima, which happens during the month of Ashwin, to be the “Night of Awakening,” when Maa Laxmi is said to manifest on Earth to bestow blessings upon her devotees. The prosperity, wealth, and heavenly blessings of the god are bestowed onto the devotees who do the puja ceremonies with the utmost dedication. In the northern Indian states, the harvest and Kojagara celebrations fall on the same day.
Performing the following rituals during Laxmi Puja 2023 will bring blessings and prosperity:
1. Cleaning the house and surroundings to create a pure environment.
2. Decorating the house with rangoli, flowers, lights, and lamps.
3. Wearing new clothes and observing fasting.
4. Decorating the idols of Goddess Laxmi with flowers and red clothing.

A Laxmi Puja is performed by devotees under the direction of a priest. Goddess Laxmi is beseeched with offerings of narkel bhaja, taaler phol, naru, khichuri, and sweets to obtain her divine blessings. Women draw Alpana in front of their homes on this specific day to symbolize the feet of Goddess Laxmi. It is thought that Goddess Laxmi makes her way to every home on this day.
Reciting the following mantras during Laxmi Puja brings blessings and prosperity:
1. Laxmi Beej Mantra:
"ॐ श्रीं श्रीये नम" or "Om Shring Shriye Namah"
Meaning: I meditate upon the great Goddess, the wife of Lord Vishnu, to bless me with intellect, riches, and abundance.
2. MahaLaxmi Mantra:
"ॐ सर्वाबाधा विनिर्मुक्तो, धन धान्यः सुतान्वितः।
मनुष्यो मत्प्रसादेन भविष्यति न संशयः ॐ" or "Om Sarvabaadhaa Vinirmukto, Dhan Dhaanyah Sutaanvitah |
Manushyo Matprasaaden Bhavishyati Na Sanshayah Om"
Meaning: I pray to Goddess Laxmi to remove all obstacles, bless us with wealth and prosperity, and ensure a bright future.
3. GajaLaxmi Mantra:
"ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं गजलक्ष्म्यै नमः" or "Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Gajalakshmaye Namah"
Meaning: I worship the goddess who is adored by elephants, the symbol of wealth and prosperity. May she bestow the same upon her devotees.
