It all started in 2011 when Jatin Varma thought of bringing the comic con event to India. Comic con events were already popular in different parts of the world.
However, they had not arrived in India by 2011. Since there was no shortage of pop culture fans in India, Jatin Varma thought of founding a special Comic Con event for India.
He founded and directed the company Comic Con India Pvt. Ltd. responsible for hosting the event.
The company was a joint venture between two foreign companies and an Indian company named Twenty Onwards Media. Comic Con India concentrated on both Indian and foreign comics, movies, TV shows, and video games.
The first-ever Comic Con was finally hosted on the 19th and 20th of February 2011 in Delhi. No other city was selected to host the event, as the entire Comic Con 2011 was hosted in Dilli Haat.
In 2011, the first-ever Comic Con Express was also hosted. Comic Con Express is a mobile version of the event that started in Mumbai.
At that time, Comic Con Express invited only 60 participants and 45 exhibits. However, the first-ever Comic Con India in New Delhi attracted more than 15,000 participants.
When the organiser tasted success, they held the second Comic Con event at the same location in Delhi in 2012.
However, there were two express editions of Comic Con India in 2012 held in Bangalore and Mumbai, respectively. In 2013, Comic Con India finally grew and was organised in New Delhi and Bangalore.
In 2013, a Free Comic Book Weekend was also launched. It allowed fans to download some comics for free on Readwhere, a marketplace for digital content.
In 2014, the Comic-Con event was organised in three different cities. Mumbai was added to the list of cities hosting the Comic Con India event in 2014.
However, the 2015 edition of Comic Con India was organised only in Bangalore and New Delhi. In 2016, Comic Con India was hosted in Hyderabad and Delhi. In 2019, the Comic Con India event was finally organised in five different cities.
Ahmedabad was added to the list of cities hosting the event in 2019. However, the event was organised in digital format for the years 2020 and 2021.
It happened because it was not possible to host Comic Con India physically during the COVID pandemic.
