What is Billboard Music Awards about?

The Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) is one of the hottest award shows in the music industry. Organised by Billboard, a popular publication in the music business and music popularity chart, it happens in May every year. This year, the awards will happen on 14 May in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. 

The popular awards categories of the event include Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, and Top Hot 100 Songs. Each year, the awards also feature performances by the top artists in the music industry.

History

The Billboard Music Awards was developed by Rick Garson, Paul Flattery, and Jim Yukich in 1990. The first ever Billboard Music Awards was held in Santa Monica city in 1990 with Fox as the TV network. Since then, it has been organised in December every year. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances, the awards were cancelled in 2007 and not held again until May 2011. 

From 2011 to 2017, the awards were televised by the ABC network. The categories were also revised for the first time in 2011. “Top” was added to all the award names, and “of the year” was removed from all the categories. Some awards were discontinued, while some were renamed. 

From 2017 onwards, the awards moved to NBC under a multi-year contract. Two new categories were also added in 2017. 

Concept

The concept of the show is pretty simple. And yet, it is one of the most awaited music awards of the year. The event seeks to entertain viewers while honouring the best names in the music industry.

Apart from awards distribution, the event features performances from fan favourites and the most famous artists in the industry. It is aired on NBC and is also available on demand for fans. 

The unique part of the Billboard Music Awards is how the nominations and winners are determined. The finalists are based on digital song sales, album sales, social engagement, radio airplay, and several other factors. • Drake holds the record for bagging most Billboard Music Awards. The number of his awards is 34 and still counting. The second place belongs to Taylor Swift, with 29 awards, followed by Beyonce. 
• Korean group BTS holds the record for most Billboard awards won by a group, with a total of 12 awards. 
• Drake holds the record for most wins in a single ceremony with 13 awards, followed by Adele and Drake with 12 awards.

2022 Rewind

The BBMAs 2022 was an unforgettable night. The event was hosted by the famous artist Diddy who also gave the first performance. Rauw Alejandro, Megan Thee Stallion, and Burna Boy got the opportunity to perform for the first time. Many new artists, including Silk Sonic, Becky G, and Kelly, made their performance debut. 

The Weeknd was the most nominated artist for the second time in a row, with 16 nominations to his name! Doja Cat followed with 14 nominations. The event was made special with an extra tribute performance to a pop icon by Silk Sonic, Maxwell, Florence and the Machine. Five new award categories were also added to the category list.
