Navaratri 2022: Navaratri, one of the most revered and auspicious Hindu holidays that dates back to time immemorial, is one of the oldest celebrations. It is widely observed in India and other countries span nine straight days and nights. However, Navaratri has diverse connotations throughout India and is observed according to the lunar calendar, which is why it is observed as Sharad Navratri in September and October rather than Chaitra Navratri in March and April. During Navaratri, devotees from rural and urban areas congregate to perform "puja" on little shrines that depict the goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati and other attributes of Goddess Durga. For nine days straight during Navaratri, mantra chanting, bhajan performances, and folk melodies typically accompany the puja rites.

Why this festival is Called Navaratri?

The word "navavratri"—which means "nine" in Sanskrit—comes from the words "ratri," which means "night." The well-known Navaratri legend emphasises the noteworthy conflict between the formidable monster Mahishasura and Goddess Durga. Indians celebrate Navaratri with great excitement and religious zeal. Even though ceremonial displays and rituals may vary, all towns and states share the same underlying spirit and message. The celebrations now take on enormous proportions in countries with sizable Indian populations, such as the UK, Canada, Singapore, and the USA. During the nine-night festival, devotees offer prasad, participate in the Dandiya Raas and Garba, and pray to the goddess Durga.

Navaratri 2022 Celebration

During the nine nights of worship, Goddess Durga is worshipped as "Shakti," the goddess of power, for the first three days, as "Lakshmi," the goddess of wealth, for the next three days, and as "Saraswati," the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, for the last three days.

Devotees observe fasts throughout this time and typically forgo grains, onions, meat, and alcohol from their diets. In North India, special Navaratri food is prepared for these devotees who are fasting.

Navaratri, also known as Durga Puja, is the greatest festival of the year in Eastern India. During this period, large pandals are erected, adorned with light, and various cultural events are held.

The Navaratri dance, also referred to as Garba and Dandiya in Gujarat and Maharashtra, is performed by locals when they dance while dressed in traditional attire and holding dandiya sticks. During Navaratri, there are special jatras in Goa, and the Saraswat Brahmin temples are decked. The Dasha Maitrikas are worshipped by devotees using sandalwood paste, kumkum, and new clothing and jewelry. In Kerala, Ayudha Puja is performed on the ninth day to bless all the household tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindus celebrate Navratri, a nine-day celebration during which worshippers worship the goddess, Durga. One of the most significant festivals, Navaratri, is observed under several names throughout the nation. The term 'Navratri' means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit, and the 'Nine Forms of Goddess Durga' are worshipped over the course of nine days.
During Navaratri, it is not acceptable to shave, cut nails, or get your hair done. If one does this, the goddess is believed to become enraged and one is said to have to endure her wrath. If you have to go to the office, you may shave once or twice, but for the next nine days, don't cut your hair or your nails.
Despite the fact that marriages are not performed during Navratri, all other kinds of auspicious works occur. One can begin a new job with the mother's blessing, but one cannot get married during Navaratri.
During illness, menstruation, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and travel, exceptions to Navaratri fasting are permitted. Subjects who couldn't fast or weren't advised to fast were omitted.
If the Vishnu Purana is to be believed, Navaratri sleep in the afternoon should be avoided. It is stated that if you sleep during the day, all of the 'good karma' that you gained during the fast is lost.
