Naga Panchami is a day of traditional snake worship observed by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists in India, Nepal, and other places where Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist devotees live. According to the Hindu calendar, the devotion is held on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravana (July/August). Naga Panchami is observed in some Indian states, including Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, on the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the same month. As part of the festivities, a Naga or serpent deity made of silver, stone, wood, or a painting is bathed in milk and their blessings are requested for the family's well-being. On this day, live snakes, particularly cobras, are also venerated.

The Legend Behind The Panchmi

There are numerous legends and folklore stories in Hinduism that emphasise the significance of snake worship. Kashyapa, grandson of the universal creator Lord Brahma,nag-panchmi-images married two daughters of Prajapati Daksha, Kadru, and Vinata, according to Hindu Puranas and the Mahabharata.

Kadru then gave birth to the Naga race, while Vinata gave birth to Aruna, who became the charioteer of the sun deity, Surya, as well as the magnificent bird Garuda, who became Vishnu's carrier.

Naga Panchami is also a day when Akhara, traditional Indian wrestling gyms, celebrate the mystical significance of the snake as a symbol of virility and kundalini force.

According to another legend, Janamejaya, Parikshit's son, organised a Nag Yagya to exact revenge on snakes after Takshak killed his father. This Yajna was halted by Rishi Jaratkaru's son, Aastik Muni. Shravan Shukla Panchami was the day he halted the Yajna.

Significance Of The Festival

Snakes are worshipped to placate Lord Shiva, who wears a cobra around his neck. On Nag Panchami Day, devotees worship live cobras and offer them milk and other offerings. Devotees also refrain from digging in the dirt on this day.

Nagas control and live in Patal Loka, according to Hindu texts. There are twelve well-known Nagas. Goddess Mansa is the mother of all Nagas and Vasuki's sister.

Celebrations Across India

Naga Panchami is performed at practically all Shiva temples in India because Shravan is considered Lord Shiva's month and snakes are sacred to him. On this day, people visit several Nag temples across the country to offer their prayers. Around the temples, there are several live snakes and snake charmers. Some groups even bring snake idols home to worship. People put on new clothes, collect offerings for the snakes, and repeat a specific mantra. The milk is the focal point of the offerings because worshippers believe it will protect their family from snake bites. On Naag Panchami, some individuals believe it is also improper to dig in the dirt and use black iron utensils.

Nag Panchami celebrations are most prevalent in the state of Maharashtra. Naga Panchami is celebrated in Battis Shirala Village near Mumbai. Extensive Nag Panchami celebrations may also be seen in and around Maharashtra's Nagpur district.

Naga, cobras, and snakes are worshipped on Naga Panchami with milk, sweets, flowers, lamps, and even sacrifices. Naga or serpent idols made of silver, stone, wood, or wall paintings are bathed in water and milk before being worshipped with the recitation of the following mantras.
